Galveston Criminal Defense Attorney Discusses Arrests Made Over Mardi Gras Weekend

Hey everybody. I haven’t been live for a while and since we had the first weekend of Mardi Gras, I thought I would look at the police activity over the weekend and give you all the number of arrests for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I’ll do this again next week, for this weekend coming up. It turns out it was less active than I expected on Friday. I’ll go over each day, it only runs till midnight, and then any activity after midnight will pick up on the next day. I’m only pointing out arrests. There is information on incidents, traffic citations, accidents, and other police interactions, but I only look at the arrests and don’t look at all the other possible law enforcement contact.

On Friday we had a total of 53 arrests. With seven of those being DWI arrests. Typically, on the bigger weekends the DWI Task Force is out trying to get people for DWI. Seven DWI’s is not a huge amount, but it’s still more than we’d like to see. Again, 53 Total arrests on Friday, February 2.

Saturday, we had a total of 54 arrests, just one more than on Friday. With 10 of those being DWI arrests. So we saw an increase of three in the number of DWI arrests, but only an increase of one up to 54 in the total arrests made on Saturday.

Sunday, we had 93 arrests. The first DWI arrest was right after midnight. So Saturday night going into Sunday morning saw the most DWI arrests with a total of 12. Saturday, after midnight into Sunday, was the bigger day for police activity during this first weekend of Mardi Gras.

Again, I’ll go through this next weekend as well. Typically, the second weekend is larger. Plus, this last weekend on Saturday morning we had a lot of rain, which may have affected the crowd size. I think they’re forecasting some rain for this weekend, so that may affect us again. I like to do these analyses because, since we are a tourist town, the question often gets posed to me, when does police activity pick up?

One of the things to consider is when we have big events, you’ll typically see more police activity, just because there are so many people here and alcohol is usually involved, leading to other crimes. There are plenty of arrests for violence, family violence, and things like that. Sometimes alcohol is a factor, not always, but sometimes. So whenever we have a big weekend, I like to discuss the numbers we had for that weekend. That wraps it up. We had 53 arrests Friday, 54 Saturday, and 93 Sunday. Enjoy the rest of your week, thanks.
