Thanksgiving Weekend Crime in Galveston
Thanksgiving Weekend Crime in Galveston
Hey y’all, I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving holiday. What I want to do today on this Facebook live is similar to what I did after the biker rally, just go over the arrests that we had during the Thanksgiving holiday. It’s about what I expected, maybe a little less than I expected. I started with Wednesday, figuring that most people start their Thanksgiving festivities Wednesday night. I went over arrests Wednesday-Sunday. Here’s kind of an overview of what we had.
On Wednesday, the 23rd, we had a total of 36 arrests. On Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, we had 28 arrests. On Friday, we had 32, Saturday 21. Then Sunday back up to 32. Again, it was about what I expected to see.
Generally, in my experience, what we see on holiday weekends, especially involving family gatherings, are DWIs, intoxication offenses, and unfortunately, assault of a family member. I went through each day and looked at what we had. On Wednesday, we had 3 DWI cases. Assault of a family member cases, we had 3.
On Thanksgiving Day, we had four DWI cases. Along with four assault of a family member cases. One of them was an aggravated assault on a family member with a weapon, but I just lumped that in with the other family violence arrests on that day. Then on Friday, we had 8 DWI arrests and 4 assault of a family member cases.
The DWI cases went up considerably the day after Thanksgiving. Then Saturday was the lightest day with only 21 Total arrests. We had three assault of a family member cases, one of those being aggravated with a weapon. No DWIs on Saturday. Sunday was a bigger day; we went back up to 32 arrests. Out of those 32, only two DWIs and no family violence cases. I’m guessing by Sunday, everyone had gone back home, or at least they left the family gatherings. It is unfortunate, but that is the trend we see over holiday weekends.
I’ll try to keep doing these reports on holiday crime spikes. I started doing it after the biker rally and I got some positive feedback. I’ll start trying to do it on major event weekends on the island, and holiday weekends. New Year’s Eve will be the next big one. There will probably be a lot of alcohol-related activity on New Year’s Eve. Anyway, I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. Have a good rest of your week and I’ll see y’all soon.
